What he does
Tom studies weather and climate. He's trying to figure out ways to improve forecasting dangerous weather, so scientists can warn us about tornadoes, hurricanes, high winds and floods. He also prepares people for big climate changes like El Niño.

How he got into science
Like many children, Tom was excited by severe weather. In his senior year, tornadoes devastated his home state of Indiana.

Favorite accomplishments
Tom taught meteorology to Hokule'a navigator Nainoa Thompson. He also helped advise voyages of the Hokule'a.

During Hurricane Iniki, you might have seen him on TV, providing updates for Channel 2 News.

In his free time
He likes to golf and drive sportscars.

Quote
"To a meteorologist, there is no such thing as bad weather."
