What he does
Tom figures out which minerals make up planet surfaces. He does this by using telescopes and gadgets on spacecraft to analyze light reflecting off the planets.

How he got into science
Tom discovered the wonders of science by going to lectures and doing experiments with his father, who passed along his passion for chemistry.

Favorite accomplishments
Before astronauts landed on the moon, Tom correctly predicted what lunar lava flows are made of. Recently, he discovered that salty minerals cover much of Jupiter's moon Europa. They probably formed when salty water deep underground erupted onto the surface.

In his free time
Tom likes to hike, fish and hunt with his dog, Dandy. He also likes to play the piano (without Dandy).
