What he does
Steve explores the many mysteries of coral reefs. His research focuses on reef ecology and biology. He also looks at the effects of alien species on reefs.

How he got into science
In high school, Steve read National Geographic and books by Jacques Cousteau, and watched Stan Waterman's films about the oceans. They captured his imagination and led him into the study of marine biology.

Favorite accomplishments
Steve proved that as water temperatures rise to certain levels, corals become bleached, and then die. Researchers around the world now use this information as they study coral reefs.

In his free time
Steve enjoys scuba diving, house repairs, writing, exercise and racquetball.

Quote
"Understanding environmental change, like presidential election results, sometimes takes longer than you might expect."
