What he does
Steven studies storms and their hazards.

How he got into science
Steven started investigating avalanches so he could spend time in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. Witnessing the way storms increased the threat of an avalanche, he began to watch the storms.

Favorite accomplishments
Steven identified a unique kind of storm that forms in the Arctic. It looks very much like a hurricane on satellite photos. The work, he says, was like finding and describing a new butterfly.

In his free time
Steven still likes to hike in the mountains. He also likes to play guitar and piano, and surf and play tennis with his two boys.
