What she does
Karen uses the world's biggest telescopes to study comets.

How she got into science
Karen was always interested in science. She used her dad's home telescope to see her first stars. But it was "Star Trek" that really turned her on to astronomy.

Favorite accomplishments
Karen discovered that the "asteroid" called 2060 Chiron actually had a dust tail…which meant it was a comet, not an asteroid at all. Another great surprise was watching Halley's comet at the moment it had a sudden explosion of activity.

In her free time
Karen likes to hike, kayak and scuba dive. To relax, she cooks gourmet foods, plays piano and reads.

"Always follow your dream-there will always be a job for those who enjoy what they are going and do things well."
