What he does
Klaus Keil studies meteorites, searching for clues to how the planets and asteroids formed.

How he got into science
When Klaus was just 12, he started doing college chemistry experiments in his house. His mother encouraged her budding scientist, even after he set fire to curtains in their kitchen!

Favorite accomplishment
Klaus was thrilled to work on space missions, including the Apollo missions to the Moon and the Viking missions to Mars. Still, he says, studying meteorites excites him the most.

In his free time
Klaus is a devoted tennis player. He shares his love for the game with his daughter and son, who grew up to be tennis professionals.

Quote
"Meteorites are the Rosetta stones of the solar system."
