What he does
Gerard studies tsunamis and the earthquakes and landslides that cause them. He's trying to find ways to accurately warn people about tsunamis.

How he got into science
"All kids are scientists: they ask questions," says Gerard. "I just never grew up." Gerard enjoyed biology, but switched to physics in college. He now uses physics to study the Earth.

Favorite accomplishments
Gerard has found that the size of earthquakes depends on the speed of the plates of the Earth. He also discovered that a landslide, not an earthquake, caused the great tsunami of April 1, 1946.

In his free time
Gerard wanders the mountains with his dog and camera. He also reads, and works on his novel.
