What
he does
Frank studies volcanoes here and abroad to understand how they affect
people. He uses data from earthquakes, volcanic gases, ground deformities
and geologic mapping to predict future eruptions.
How
he got into science
His father says "Frank was always playing in the dirt."
Frank says he was interested in how things worked. Eager to work
outdoors, he tried forestry. Then an internship at the Hawaiian
Volcano Observatory sparked his passion for volcanoes.
Favorite
accomplishments
Frank was the first to find physical proof of the theory that there
was a deep plumbing system under Kilauea Volcano.
In
his free time
He enjoys ocean kayaking, boogie boarding, camping, hiking, fishing,
reading, gardening, traveling and making beer.
Quote
"If you can't feel the heat you're too far away."
