What
he does
Frank studies insects and their relatives living in caves and barren
rock habitats. He also studies how invading species affect native
species.

he got into science
Frank grew up on a farm, surrounded by intriguing insects. When
he was four, Frank collected some for his sister's biology class.
He knew then he wanted to be an entomologist.
Favorite
accomplishments
Frank discovered the first cave-adapted animals in Hawai'i . He also
discovered how wind-blown animals and plants settle and live on
barren lava flows. His work in conservation biology has led to a
whole new area of study.
In
his free time
He enjoys hiking, exploring caves, collecting insects, reading,
solving puzzles and helping his family. He conducts "thought
experiments" (daydreaming) to understand how natural things
work.
