What he does
Chip monitors reefs, beaches and dunes throughout the Hawaiian Islands and the Red Sea. He and his group collect coral samples and take airborne images of reefs so they can understand how climate change affects reef health.
He also checks old aerial photos of beaches around Hawai'i , comparing them with current ones to see which beaches are in danger.

How he got into science
Chip chose science because he was intrigued by the way nature works...and he wanted a job that would let him work outdoors.

Favorite accomplishments
After proving that sea walls were degrading island beaches, Chip worked to outlaw sea walls, protecting the beaches.

In his free time
Chip swims open ocean races, plays the conga, and enjoys spending time with his family.
