What
he does
Alexander takes manned submersibles down to the ocean depths to
study undersea volcanoes and the ocean floor.
How
he got into science
Growing up in New Zealand, Alex got intrigued by the active volcanoes
and hot springs. As a schoolboy, he hiked every volcano there. He
came to Hawai'i to study geophysics, flying planes over volcanoes
to study their magnetism.
Favorite
accomplishments
Besides flying over volcanoes, he's had the chance to dive in most
of the world's deep-diving submersibles.
In
his free time
He plays tennis and golf, swims, enjoys outdoor photography and
works on cars.
Quote
"Living in Hawai'i , we have a golden opportunity to study
the wonders of the deep oceans. The ocean surrounding our islands
is the best natural laboratory nature could have provided."
